The Roots of Ube Pandesal
PANDESAL, also known as “Pan De Sal” is a traditional Filipino bread roll that is a staple in Filipino cuisine. The name “pandesal” is derived from the Spanish words “pan” (bread) and “sal” (salt), reflecting its simple ingredients.
Ube Pandesal traces its origins back to the Philippines. Where pandesal, a sweet and soft bread roll, is a breakfast staple. While it is commonly eaten for breakfast, pandesal is also enjoyed throughout the day in the Philippines.
UBE, also known as purple yam. Yam is a versatile tuber that adds a captivating hue and a distinct flavor to the bread. Traditionally made by hand, this delightful treat has now entered modern kitchens. Thanks to the innovation of bread machines.Â

Tips on making the dough rise:
If you live in cooler weather like I do, (I’m talking about winter months) here are a few tips on making your dough rise quickly.
- Preheat the Oven:Â Preheat your oven to the lowest possible temperature (usually around 170 degrees F or 75 degrees C for 10 minutes). Preheating is essential to create a warm environment for the dough.
- Prepare the Dough:Â Prepare your pandesal dough or any dough according to the recipe.
- Cover the Dough:Â Place the prepared dough in a lightly oiled bowl, covering it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap to retain moisture.
- Turn off the Oven:Â Â Once the oven reaches the preheated temperature, turn it off. You want a warm but not hot environment for the dough to rise.
- Place the Dough in the Oven:Â Â Put the covered bowl with the dough inside the turned-off oven.
- Keep the Door Ajar:Â Â To maintain a warm environment without overheating, leave the oven door slightly ajar. This allows excess heat to escape, preventing the oven from becoming hot.
- Allow the Dough to Rise:Â Â Let the dough rise in the warm oven until it has doubled in size. This process takes about 1-2 hours.
- Remove and Proceed with the Recipe:Â Â Once the dough has doubled in size, remove it from the oven and proceed with the remaining steps of your recipe, such as shaping and baking.
